Getting Rid of Weed Plants and Controlling Pests

While gardening is one of the most enjoyable activities available, there are chores that have to be done by every gardener. One of these is keeping your garden in top condition by removing weed plants and instituting a regime of pest control. Whether you practice organic gardening or use chemicals; are into vegetable gardening or trying to grow the perfect lawn; small scale or large, you will invariable come across pests and weeds that can potentially ruin all your hard work.

Weeding can be a tedious chore, but if you are determined to not use chemicals on your plants this may be your only option for keeping weeds at bay. It is less of a problem if you weed often, rather than attempting to remove large amounts of weeds on an irregular basis.

There are also methods to try and stop weeds appearing in the first place. Planting groundcover on areas of bare earth gives the weeds less chance to grow. Keeping your garden plants healthy also helps prevent the invasion of weeds, and this is especially true for weed control in lawns. Weeds like to grow in cracks and crevices, and one of the best gardening tips is to control them by covering them with salt (which also deters slugs).

Getting Rid of Those Creepy-Crawlies

There are various alternatives to using chemicals to control pests. Planting flowering plants will help increase the number of beneficial insects that eat garden pests, or you can even buy insects that will help control certain pests. One of the greatest pests to all types of gardens, snails and slugs, can be deterred with untreated sawdust, which you can then dig in to the soil next time you are planting.

The most important thing when trying to control pests, whether organically or with chemicals, is to check plants frequently and act quickly to keep the pests under control.
