How to Plant Vegetable Seed From A Seed Catalogue Outdoors

Many types of vegetable seed grow well and produce bountiful crops from seeds purchased from seed companies throughout the United States; if these vegetable seeds are good quality products, purchased from reputable companies and are planted directly into tilled soil, in either rows or hills.

Here is a step by step guide to seed starting when planting a garden:

  • Read the information on the seed packet very carefully. It will tell you when to plant your vegetable seeds according to your climate and location, which planting method to use, and how deep and how far apart to plant them.
  • Make a series of holes using a garden hoe. Each one should be the depth recommended on the seed packet for the variety you intend to plant. In general, the larger the seed, the deeper it goes into the soil.
  • Plant the starting seeds in the hole as per the recommendation, and use the back of a rake to cover the seeds with loose soil.
  • Pat down the row of seeds very lightly with the back of the rake (ideally you want the soil to be just firm enough so that the top soil won't blow away and expose the seeds).
  • Water thoroughly and regularly but gently, so not to disturb the vegetable seeds. Use the fine-spray setting on a hose nozzle or a watering can with a fine spray.
