Tomato Plant - Learning How to Grow Tomatoes Organically

More Americans grow the tomato plant than any other summer favorite - for salads, salsas and spaghetti sauce. Growing tomatoes organically for the confidence of fresh eating - without the concerns that come with using chemical fertilizers and pesticides - is the key to successful tomatoes.

Here Are a Few Ways to Use Tomato Plants to Grow Tomatoes

Put your best organic matter to work in growing tomatoes – pay careful attention to your vegetable gardens in an attempt to prevent problems that might tempt you to use synthetic pesticides later on. Nurture organic soil that will encourage worms and support the big, leafy tops your tomatoes need to ripen lots of fruit.

Select a sunny site in your garden that you can water easily but that drains well - whether it's a garden bed or a garbage can that doubles as a container on the patio.

Ensure to feed your tomato seeds with fertilizer once per fortnight until they begin to grow fruit, and then repeat again after each flush of fruit.

Provide essential air circulation by growing mulched tomatoes on tall stakes, in wire tomato cages or attach the plants to a trellis. (Most tomato plants reach six feet in height, and if you allow them to crawl on the ground you increase the risk of soil disease.)

Water your tomato plants regularly. If they are left to wilt between irrigations they become easily stressed and less inclined to grow and flourish.

Add mulch under the tomato plants when the soil is warm to keep weeds, soil temperature and water levels moderated and to prevent blossom end rot.
