Tomato Bugs Are a BotherGrowing tomatoes will give you some of the most healthy and vitamin rich vegetable resources that you can provide for your family. One thing that can be a bother is tomato bugs. They can cause tomato problems so it is a good idea to be familiar with some of the common bugs. The whitefly is one bug that will appear on the bottom of leaf surfaces in clusters. This bug is hard to control on the plant, but it will not necessarily affect the amount of tomatoes that your plant yields. The tomato fruitworm is a bugger of a bug that will feed on the tomato fruit. As the fruit is in the ripening stages, the tomato fruitworm nestles in and takes up residence in the tomato plants. To control this bug, carbaryl is an insecticide that is recommended. However, there are other organic ways to alleviate the kinds of bugs that will terrorize tomatoes. By planting wild flowers near the tomatoes, you can attract insects that are beneficial to the tomatoes. The beneficial bugs that will help the tomatoes are ladybugs, lacewings and other bugs that are natural predators of such tomato bugs as aphids and whiteflys. Other Organic TricksThe tomatoes can be protected from bugs naturally by adding other garden seed or wild herbs to your garden design. Problems can be avoided by taking small natural measures. For example, by planting dill you will attract the tomato hornworm away from the tomatoes. Caterpillars and green tomato monsters may be sighted on the plants. The best way to get rid of them is to pick them off by hand. If the bug has white spots on its back, they are the larva of its predator, so leave it for a while. Also, by planting calendula and nasturtium, you will aid in keeping aphids away from bugging your tomatoes. |
