Using Sweet Corn Seed for Planting Your Corn

More than any other vegetable, sweet corn seed is the easiest way to grow gorgeous dinner time vegetables. Planting corn is simple with a few easy steps. Using sweet corn when planting is a sure fire way to grow delicious corn.

Corn tastes optimal when you pick it and then immerse it straight in boiling hot water because its sugar turns to starch in a mere heartbeat. When using sweet corn for growing corn, the corn needs hot weather and plenty of time to ripen up.

A Step by Step Guide to Growing Corn in Your Vegetable Garden

  • Be mindful that corn needs soil that is rich, moisture-retentive and well-draining. The soil should also have had plenty of compost turned through it prior to planting.
  • Select a site with optimum soil and access to full sun.
  • Finding the right planting time is important. Plant seeds at least a week after the last good frost and when the soil temperature has reached at least 55-65 degrees F.
  • Sow corn seed around 1 inch deep into the soil and around 4-6 inches apart. And for optimum results, plant the seeds in small clusters of hills or mounds, with several seeds planted within each hill.
  • Ensure that you water the corn plants at least weekly.
  • To help your corn seed plants thrive feed them with a balanced liquid organic fertilizer at least three times during their growth phase: at 10 inches, 18 inches, and when their tassels appear.
  • Harvest the corn when the husks have turned dark green, silks are dry and brown but still supple, and full-size kernels reach to the top of the ear. For most varieties, this happens at around 20 days after the silks first appear.
