Roma Tomatoes - A Taste of Italy!

When are tomatoes not JUST ordinary tomatoes? When they are roma tomatoes of course! Succulent and full of taste, these tomatoes, often called plum tomatoes because of their shape, are perfect for adding flavor to your cooking. Despite their name however, these tomato plants don’t just come from Italy – these days they are just as likely to have been planted in California or Mexico!

These tomatoes are grown vertically up poles which are planted in the ground. It’s ok to pick these tomatoes when they are still a little green as the tomatoes will ripen after they’ve been taken from their plants. Try to avoid any tomatoes that have broken skins, or tomatoes that have slight brownish hue on their skin.

Cooking with Tomatoes a la Roma!

Give your dishes that Italian flare with these tomatoes. You can eat them as they come from the plant! Slice them into wedges and eat them raw – for a slight cooling edge on a hot day, pop the tomato wedges into the freezer and let them chill for a half an hour or so until they become a little icy. An instant tomato ice cooler!

Use your vegetable slicer to thinly slice these versatile tomatoes and add them to salads for a splash of color as well as taste.

Soups and sauces made with these plum tomatoes have a special zing taste that is missing with many other varieties.

  • Remove the tomato skins and add them to your pizza sauce for a real Italian taste.
  • Cut the tomatoes into wedges and place them skin side down on the grill.
  • Sprinkle a little salt and parmesan cheese on the top of the tomato for a tasty BBQ side dish.
