Planting Soy Bean in your Backyard GardenGardeners generally divide bean varieties into three main categories, depending on the stage at which they're usually picked and eaten: snap, shell and dry. Planting soy bean is simple and growing them in your vegetable garden is straightforward. Soy beans need the same conditions as other beans in your vegetable gardens - the prime one being plenty of warmth. How to Begin to Plant Soy Beans in Your GardenChoose a spot in your garden layout that is in full sun (it is okay to select partial afternoon shade in very hot climates) that has well-drained soil. Add organic matter that is high in phosphorus and potassium. Sow seeds outdoors after the last frost has passed and the soil temperature has warmed. Plant seeds at least an inch deep in the soil and two to three inches apart in rows. Thin the soy beans out when the seedlings begin to emerge from the soil so that bush varieties are five to six inches apart. In humid climates, increase the distance between plants to allow good air circulation between each plant. Ensure that the soy beans receive about an inch of water each week. But be careful not to over water as too much water causes more damage to the beans than if they had been under watered. Mulch with compost when the soy bean plants have developed their second set of leaves. Pick snap beans when they're young and tender, before you notice the seed starting to swell. |
