Planting potatoes lets you experiment with different potato varieties

If you're planting potatoes in your vegetable garden, you can try all kinds of different varieties. Planting potatoes gives you a chance to experiment with potato varieties you might never see in your local grocery store.

If you're planting potatoes yourself, your choice of potato varieties includes:

  • Yukon Gold
  • Superior
  • Red Pontiac
  • Russet
  • Kennebec
  • White Rose
  • Norland

Seed potatoes are available if you're planting potatoes from any of these potato varieties.

When you're planting potatoes, you can't just pull a potato out of the bag you bought at the local supermarket and plant it. To be successful at growing potatoes, you need to start with seed potatoes, which you can get in almost all potato varieties.

When planting potatoes, think about how you'll be using them after they're harvested. Some potato varieties are better for baking, some better for frying, and some are better mashed. Some varieties, such as Yukon Gold, store better than others as well.

If you're planning on planting potatoes, it should be made a part of your vegetable garden planning. By planning ahead, you'll be sure to get the potato varieties best suited for your garden and for your needs. We have some recommended sources for seed potatoes on our seed companies page.
