Seeing is Believing - Pictures of Vegetables

Borecoles, Cape gooseberry, Salsify – there are many great vegetables out there to tempt the adventurous gardener working on their vegetable garden design. Many gardeners are held back, however, since they don’t know what they are growing is meant to look like – it sounds good, but is what you have in your garden healthy or not? Or perhaps you were given some vegetable seeds by a friend but don’t know what to expect. While not as good as having your hand on the real thing, pictures of vegetables can help you tell if what you have in your garden is a healthy vegetable or a reason to dig the garden over and start again.

There has been an explosion of gardening info available on the internet in recent years. Pictures of most vegetables are available, often with information on how to grow them and how the vegetable is best prepared. A problem can be encountered if using a search engine to find a picture of a vegetable is that you may have to wade through clip art and artistic photographs before you find what you are looking for. Like searching for any information on the internet, it is best to be as specific as possible about the vegetable you are looking for, and remember to add that you are looking for a picture, not just text information.

The internet is not your only source of information. The staff at your local gardeners supply store are sure to be able to offer you a wealth of information, and can perhaps do even better than a picture, by providing you with the actual vegetable you are wondering about. A garden supply store will also be able to help you track down a rare vegetable you have decided you want to try in your garden, providing either vegetable seeds or seedlings for you to try.
