John Deere Garden Tractors for the Home Garden

It’s belaboring the obvious to say that not everyone needs a garden tractor for gardening. A small garden can be turned with a tiller, or even a shovel and trowel. But for large gardens, for people who are not able to do the hard work of turning the earth manually, or for other work on the land, a garden tractor can be very useful.

The most well known brand may be the John Deere garden tractors, which are available new at hardware, farm and garden stores. It is also possible to find used garden tractors in the newspaper, on the Internet, or through word of mouth.

Picking a Garden Tractor

Like many other machines, garden tractors come in a variety of powers and sizes. Choosing the tractor you want will be basically a choice between light duty or heavy duty tractors. You want to do some research on this beforehand, and consult with experienced tractor users, to find out what brands are reliable, long-lasting, and so forth. This is a particularly important area to research if you plan to buy a used tractor.

What will you be using your tractor for? Will you be mowing, plowing, removing snow? Do you need to pull stumps or bale hay? Will you be grading soil? Is your land basically flat, or is it very hilly? The answers to these questions, and to others, will help you choose your tractor and your tractor accessories.

Tractor safety is also important to consider. Tractor accidents are much more likely to be caused by operator failure than by machine failure, so it is important that you know how to use your tractor and what it is capable of before you start. There are various Internet links to tractor safety, including through the Department of Agriculture or universities. Buying a tractor, whether new or used, is a decision not to be made hastily.
