How to Freeze Corn - Preserving Your Garden Produce!Growing your own vegetables is great, but often we plant more than we can eat. This is where a freezer comes in handy. How to freeze corn is a great example of how we can preserve the produce our gardens yield. There doesn’t appear to be one way to freeze corn. Some people freeze the whole corn plant, and some people only freeze the kernels. Freezing the Corn on the CobTo blanch the corn, or not that is the question. Whether to husk the corn is another. To blanch the corn, first remove the husk and silk from the corn, wash the corn and heat some water in a pan. When the water is boiled, place the washed corn in and leave it for 5 minutes. Remove and cool it under cold water, pop in a freezer bag and freeze. Some people prefer not to blanch corn, but prefer to keep the husk intact. To do this gently pull the husk down and remove the corn silk, replace the husk and put the corn into freezer bags and put into the freezer. There are yet other people who suggest just putting the entire plant of corn in the freezer bags as its harvested and freezing it that way. Trial and error to find which way suits your personal preference seems to be the only way of finding out which way keeps the corn freshest for you. However you freeze corn, make sure it’s completely thawed before you cook it. Freezing Kernels of CornFirst husk and then blanch the ears of corn. Cool with cold water and then remove the kernels by extracting them from about 2/3 deep. Put the kernels in a freezer bag, or box, and place in the freezer. |
