How to Dry PeppersLearning how to dry peppers is a fun thing to do. Peppers in general are fun. Growing peppers is relatively easy and there are a number of different types ranging from sweet to extremely hot in taste, and different colors to choose from. To grow a nice set a peppers to see you through the winter, make sure you don’t plant them outside too early. Peppers don’t like cold soil. Make sure you grow your peppers in an area which attracts little wind as this is another thing that can discourage you peppers from achieving their full growing potential. Garden pests aren’t very keen on peppers so you could consider this when making your garden plans for the next years planting. Once your crop of growing peppers has ripened, it’s time to start thinking about getting them dried. Suggestions for Drying PeppersThe first suggestion would be a dehydrator. Put the peppers in, set the dehydrator working and there you are – dried peppers. If you are drying out the real hot peppers, you might consider trying to do this outside if it’s feasible as the smell is going to be very strong and infiltrate the entire house! You could just leave them in a bowl in the kitchen and allow the peppers to dry out naturally. Alternatively you could dry the peppers in the microwave – but be careful with this one and only do them in short blasts of a few seconds until the pepper skins wrinkle. Leave them too long and they’ll explode! By far the most popular way of drying peppers is to string them together. There are those who thread them together in a long string and hang them somewhere to dry out, and there are others who use them for edible decorations by threading the peppers in short lines and suspending them for a drape hanging pole or hanging vegetable rack. |
