Should you save your own herb seeds or buy them in seed packets?

It all depends on how much time you want to dedicate to it and what kind of results you're looking for. If you save your own herb seeds, you know what kind of results you've had with the plant and can be pretty confident you will get the same results from its seeds. If you buy seed packets, you're relying on the supplier for the quality of the seeds. On the other hand, saving your own herb seeds can be more time-consuming compared to buying them in seed packets.

If you want to save your own herb seeds for the following season, it's a fairly simple process. The seeds can be saved during the process of drying your herbs. When you hang your herbs to dry, put a paper bag around them with plenty of ventilation holes. As the plant dries, the seeds will fall into the bag. You can then put them in your own seed packets to store for the following year. Remember to label the packets so you know what the seeds are!

This can be a great project if you are gardening with children. Keeping herb seeds from one year to the next can help gets kids involved with your garden. They will learn how the garden can be self-sustaining. Starting seeds, whether you have kept them from your own garden or bought them in seed packets, is a great project for kids.

Herb seeds can be grown with limited space, too, so even if all you have is a greenhouse window, you'll be able to grow a great herb garden. It is very rewarding to have access to your own fresh herbs available whenever your cooking calls for them.
