Your herb garden can be for more than just cookingWhen most people think of an herb garden, they think in terms of using herbs when cooking. There are many other forms of herb gardening as well. Your herb garden can of course be a kitchen garden but herbs can also be planted for color, scent, groundcover or edging. Herb gardening can serve any of these purposes, or all of them. If your herb garden is for use in the kitchen, you will probably be growing herbs such as sage, thyme, basil and dill. If you want a scented garden you can plant herbs such as mint, rosemary and silver thyme. You might also want a "theme" garden, with different varieties of the same herb. Herb gardening can be quite creative. Your herb garden can be designed to fit your space. Herb gardening does not need a lot of room to be successful. You can grow an herb garden in containers, in your vegetable garden or even indoors if you wish. It can be extremely convenient to do your herb gardening in a greenhouse window in your kitchen, where you can easily reach fresh herbs anytime you want. If you grow annual varieties in your herb garden, which only grow for a single season, you can keep seeds for use the next year. Seed starting can be a fun part of herb gardening. You can start your herb plants from seeds and then transplant them into your garden or your containers once they are established and the weather is appropriate. |
