Successfully growing vegetables in plant containers

Not everyone has an expansive garden setting. Many people live in small units or apartments with the extent of their garden amounting to a few fresh herbs germinating in a planter box on the window sill. For those who do not have room for a vegetable garden or are unable to dig and weed, growing vegetables in plant containers is an easy way of expanding your gardening prowess and adding to your kitchen supplies. Growing vegetables in plant containers is straightforward. All you need is a warm area that sees the sun on a regular basis and containers that are large enough for the plants or vegetables you want to grow. Sunny decks, patios, balconies and even window ledges are ideal for container gardening and do not require the difficult digging that starting a large garden usually requires.

Here’s what you’ll need for growing vegetables in plant containers

Growing vegetables can expand in size very rapidly, particularly when you feed them nutrients, so your plant containers must be large enough and not too crowded. A container garden requires diligent watering and regular feeding, but it can be easy and fun for children and adults. The main items you will need to commence your new project are:

  • Large Clay or Plastic Pots 24" in diameter or larger
  • A Watering Can or Hose
  • Good Potting Soil (enough to fill your pots)
  • Plant fertilizer or compost
  • Starting seeds or bulbs for your desired vegetables.
