Growing onions can be done in a container garden

Growing onions can be done in a couple of ways. If you’re planting green onions and will harvest them before they get too big, they can be planted in a container garden. If you’re growing onions that will be larger when harvested, a container garden might not be large enough.

The easiest method of growing onions is to grow them from sets. These sets can grow into either green onions, which are harvested sooner, or left to grow into larger, dry onions. Green onions are the better choice if you’re growing them in a container garden because of the space.

If you’re growing onions from sets, how do you know which set will do best in a container garden?

When choosing sets for growing onions, buy firm sets early in the season. This way, they will not start to grow too early in the heated nursery or garden shop. If you’re going to plant them in a vegetable plants container garden, you can plant them right away.

If you’re growing onions outdoors rather than a container garden and aren’t planting them immediately, store them in a dark, cool, dry place until ready to plant. Separate the sets into larger and smaller sets. The larger sets are better for growing green onions, while the smaller sets are better for growing larger onions.

Growing onions from seeds is another option. When you start them from seeds, they tend to be a bit hardier than sets. This is not so important in a container garden, but if you’re planting seeds outdoors, this might be an advantage, depending on your climate.

The best type of soil for growing onions is deep, fertile, loose soil. If you’re growing them in a container garden, you can use a good pre-mixed soil from a garden supply shop. If you’re planting them in the ground, mix in compost or a good fertilizer before planting them. Onions like a steady supply of water, so be sure they get enough throughout the growing season.
