Commercial farmers who are growing mushrooms provide mushroom compost to garden centers and nurseries……but they might also sell it directly. Growing mushrooms need particular conditions and compost to be successful. The mushroom compost that you would use in your garden has already been used for growing mushrooms and is not potent enough for another crop. This mushroom compost still contains plenty of nutrients for your garden, however. These farms that are growing mushrooms sell their mushroom compost to garden centers and nurseries, but they might also sell it directly to you. If you're planting a garden and need quite a bit of compost, it can be a lot cheaper to buy it direct from a mushroom farm. If you're growing mushrooms yourself, you probably won't have enough mushroom compost to be of any real value in your garden.Farmers who are growing mushrooms do it on a much larger scale than most home gardeners. The easiest way to grow mushrooms at home is to buy a mushroom growing kit. These kits have the proper nutrients in the soil for the best conditions for mushrooms, but you won't get very much mushroom compost from them when they are done. If you do try growing mushrooms, you can throw the mushroom compost that is left when they are done on your compost pile. Sometimes the extra nutrients in your compost pile will produce one more growth of mushrooms. When you grow mushrooms, the edible plants that you pick is really just the fruit. The majority of the plant is underground, so even if you don't see any mushrooms it's still worth throwing the kit leftovers on your compost pile. |
