Greenhouse Gardening - Take Care with the HeatWhen you finally splurge and set out to become an official gardening expert of greenhouse gardening, take the time to research how you plan to keep the heat on. There are several types of greenhouse heaters that are designed specifically for greenhouses. Gardeners do not have to be experts to maintain one. If you build your greenhouse with a greenhouse kit, it may come with a heater. There are the types of heaters for greenhouses that are made to use propane or natural gas which do have pilot flames that need to be kept lit. Greenhouses and your garden in it will be safer because they operate with what is called a hot surface ignition. The heating unit does not use an open pilot flame. These modern style heaters will generally have a power exhaust system, and for worry free operation they will operate on an advanced diagnostic system. The latter is great for gardeners who want the heater to work without having to get greasy. The heater is basically smart, and it works to keep heating and at the same time checks itself to ensure that all functions are properly engaged. The standard units such as this will have fan that distributes heat evenly throughout the greenhouse. You may have to have an electrician install the heater as some wiring may be required. Your greenhouse should accommodate a 110/120v electrical capacity. These types of heaters usually will need a vent system using two pipes. Variety in How to Make the Heat HotAs you may find in gardening magazines, there are other brands of heaters that are suspended mount types of heaters. The only requirement they have is using a vent pipe to deliver heat. For installation, they are connected to a gas and electric line. These units will use standing pilot ignition, aluminized steel, and safety features such as overheating controls and a safety shut off. The variation on this type of heater for a greenhouse is similar in most ways but it has a power vent and an intermittent pilot ignition, where the pilot is lit automatically when the heater calls for heat. For hydroponics growing or other specialty items such as an annual herb garden, maintaining the proper heat with a reliable unit is essential in the greenhouse. |
