Gourd Seed - What in the Gourd? When you go in to the local plant and agriculture store and you are looking to get some gourd seed for your garden, you are getting a little more than you might have bargained for. At any typical store, especially seed companies, you will find many gourd seeds, instead of just one. Please remember that not every company will have the same variety of seeds as the other companies do. So how do you decide which gourd you would like or which sees are right from you? No one can really make that decision for you, only provide you with a brief overview of some of the more popular gourd seeds. The most well-known gourd would be the luffa gourd, with a growth time of 130 days. This gourd is known for using the seeded gourds to make the popular shower luffas that are found in stores today. The most popular gourd is the large mixed seed which needs a growing season of 120 days. Different Day, Different GourdThere are several other seed variety gourds on the market. They range from birdhouse gourd, which needs 120 days to fully grow, to bushel and bottle gourd seeds, which also each need 120 days to grow as well. An interesting note about the bushel gourd is they can weigh anywhere between 30 and 100 hundred pounds and have been shown to be great for arts and craft type projects. On average a seed from a gourd will take no less than 95 days to reach full growth and no more than 130 and on average they usually reach around 12” whether in diameter, long, or height. The seeded gourd might be one of the most diverse plants around and can be picked up at most seed companies. |
