How You Can Make Use of Garden Structures

Garden structures can serve various purposes in the garden, both practical and decorative. Pergolas and follies can add character to a garden, creating a focus point that can also be used as a covered area for outdoor events. The most practical of all structures in the garden however would have to be the greenhouse. Heated or unheated, the greenhouse is a sign of the serious gardener.

A greenhouse can be a significant investment and it is important that you erect a structure that is right for both your existing garden and future needs. While it is possible to have a greenhouse delivered and assembled, many people choose to purchase greenhouse kits and make their own. Not only do you have the satisfaction of making your own greenhouse, but you will almost certainly save some money using a kit.

Where to Find Your Greenhouse Kit

Kits for greenhouses are often available from garden stores which can also supply you with other greenhouse equipment such as heating and lighting. There are also many reputable internet suppliers of greenhouse equipment and kits. If you do not have much experience in building structures, a small and simple greenhouse will be more than adequate for raising vegetables or growing seedlings before transplanting to the garden.

Greenhouses are also necessary in some areas for gardeners interested in growing exotics such as orchids. While some greenhouses are elaborate structures, the simplest form of greenhouse is a lean-to against an existing wall.

It is important that you situate your greenhouse near an external water supply, as water is one of the most important elements of gardening in a greenhouse. This means your greenhouse will also require good drainage. Both heated and unheated greenhouses are available. An unheated greenhouse is quite useful for ripening crops from the vegetable garden or bringing flowers to bloom earlier than they would if planted in the garden.
