How to Store Garden Hoses - One of Your Most Important Gardening Supplies - for the Winter

Garden hoses deserve the very utmost respect! None of your garden supplies work harder and provide more service than your garden hose which is so often one of the most neglected garden accessories in your shed.

Prolong the Life of Your Gardening Hose by Following This Step by Step Guide

At the end of the summer season, when the rain will take care of watering the garden for you, take time to drain all the water out of the garden hose. Any water left inside the hose may freeze during winter and this may cause the hose material to rupture.

Now coil up the hose on either garden hose reels or a makeshift hook in the garden shed. This will ensure the hose retains its shape and does not attract knots and tears which can happen if left on the ground or in the garden.

Seal up the hose fittings by connecting the end fittings together which will prevent spiders and other creepy crawlies from nesting inside the hose.

It is important to store the hose up off the floor on either a hose hanger or some makeshift hooks. A shelf or a dedicated hose reel, which can be purchased from you local hardware store, will prevent the rubber material from rotting on the ground. Air circulation is vital in preventing mildew from forming inside the hose, which can lead to rotting and impromptu wear.
