Well thought-out garden design can make all the difference to your successTo get maximum enjoyment from your vegetable garden, plan your garden design first. Your garden plans will help you to get the most productive harvest possible. There are a few important things to consider in your garden design. The first thing you should think about in your garden design is what you want to grow. When you're looking through seed catalogs in the middle of winter, it's easy to get carried away with all the interesting vegetables you can grow. The thing to keep in mind at this stage of your garden plans is what are you going to eat? If nobody in your family likes cucumbers, for example, why would you want to grow them? You can always experiment with some new vegetables, but your garden design should be built around the things you know you will eat. Another very important part of your garden design is sunlight. The best laid garden plans can be of no help if your vegetables are planted where they don't get enough sun. Another thing to think about regarding sunlight is how you plant your crops. Make sure you don't put tall plants, which can block the sunlight, in front of smaller vegetables. Most vegetables need six to eight hours of sunlight to be successful. If you don't already know what parts of your yard get sun at what times of day, make a point of looking and watching for a week or two. Your garden design should be set up so the vegetables are planted where the sun shines. Your garden design should also be designed around harvest times. If your garden plans don't consider this, you might be eating a LOT of vegetables in a very short period of time!If you fail to plan a good garden design and plant all your vegetables at the same time, you will probably be harvesting them all at the same time as well. If this happens, you'll have a lot of vegetables to eat all at once. It makes much more sense to work out your garden plans so you can harvest crops throughout the growing season. If you have a greenhouse plans can be a little more flexible. Your garden design won't be as limited by the weather, even if the growing season in your planting zones is relatively short. |
