Choosing a Garden Design Magazine

Gardening is a vast hobby that has enthusiasts of all ages and from all walks of life. Consequently, there’s not just one garden design magazine on the market, there’s many! How do you choose the magazine that best suits you?

Price is a good starting point, and this usually reflects the kind of paper used, and the amount of photography illustrating the articles. Large glossy magazines with stunning photography – such as a classy seed magazine - will cost a lot more than gardening magazines using plainer paper, and fewer photographs.

The magazine content is the next thing to look at. What kind of content do you want? Spend some time flicking through magazines at the library. Do they contain lots of useful information and articles? Do they inspire you to try new things? Do they have good instructions and pictures? Are they full of advertisements?

At the other side of the scale there are also garden magazines that are produced by local horticultural societies for the benefit of their members. These are more like an extended newsletter, but if you are a dedicated gardener, then it might be useful for you to subscribe to one of these because they will be specific to your area, and will deal with gardening issues that concern local gardeners and any advertisements will be for local garden supplies stores.

Specific Subject Gardening Magazines

As with many things, you can get garden magazines which are dedicated to one aspect of gardening, such as organic gardening, or rose gardening. There are magazines which are only about garden design, and then there are seed magazines. Amateur gardeners and professional gardeners – everyone is catered for by the garden publishing industry. If you want a magazine to read whilst you wait for your tomatoes to ripen, go and see what there is on offer!
