Selecting Garden Boots and Other Gardening Accessories

One of your best friends in the garden is a good pair of garden boots that will protect your feet from blisters, bugs and rough work. Choosing the right garden accessories such as boots is important because they provide you with comfort and courage as you embark on your next vegetable gardening adventure. Garden supplies and accessories should never be skimped on!

Here Are Some Key Steps to Selecting the Right Gardening Boots and Other Accessories for Your Garden

When shopping for gardening boots ensure that you only select from a range of good-quality leather, general-purpose boots with leather uppers; these types of boots will keep your feet cool and comfortable no matter what the temperature when you are gardening.

Pick a pair of high quality rubber gardening gloves with cotton lining. This is particularly important if you are growing vegetables in a wet or muddy area.

Select a spading fork - A spading fork looks like a pitchfork but has a shorter handle and wider points. A good spading fork is enameled and won’t rust so spend the extra money on a good one if you can.

Choose a hoe that will allow you to both cultivate the earth and weed the top soil to allow for penetration of nutrients and water.

Choose a watering can. A can with a long nozzle allows the water to come out at a very gentle rate and is useful for reaching across long distances. Select a can that has a detachable spray head. The spray head is perfect for watering young seedlings.

Buy a good bow rake. Choose one which has short tines on one side attached to a metal frame or 'bow.' They’re used for leveling the soil in your vegetable garden after it has been turned and prior to planting, or for removing large clumps of earth or rocks from the soil. You can also use the flat side to smooth the garden soil in preparation for planting.

Select a pair of garden shears that fits comfortably in your hand. Shears, or clippers as they’re sometimes called, are used for pruning, shaping and removing branches and foliage.
