Create a Magical Spot with a Garden Bench

A well-placed garden bench can create a magical spot in the middle of your flower or vegetable garden.

Companies that sell garden seeds and other garden supplies often have an array of benches that can become places of rest, relaxation and reflection. When you’re planning your flower or vegetable garden design create space for one or two benches.

Use your bench to rest from your gardening chores. Strategically place a cedar bench in a shady spot near the vegetable garden. When you head outside to do your gardening chores, take along a small cooler filled with fruit, water and ice tea. Set the cooler on your bench. When you’re ready for a break, your bench and refreshments will be waiting.

For longer periods of relaxation, place a bench or garden swing where you have the best view of the sunset, your garden or the kids at play. Take off your garden gloves, put your feet up and enjoy some time to soak in the view. You spend hours working in your garden, but how often do you sit back and enjoy just looking at it?

Choose the Style that Suits You Best

Benches come in several styles and types of materials. Choose a style that fits your landscape design. Don’t be afraid to mix and match bench designs in the same garden. You can have a wrought iron bench swing under the tree and a wooden bench near the pumpkin patch.

Choose benches made from materials that can take the weather. Stone benches are the most durable and also the most expensive. Treated woods, recycled plastics and wrought iron also make suitable outdoor benches. Look for bench ideas at lawn and garden stores. Look for seasonal savings on benches in August and September.

You can easily build your own rustic bench from rough-hewn timber or stones. One innovative gardener crafts benches from used pallets that he gets free from trucking companies. Easy-to-follow plans for building your own bench are available online and from home and garden supply stores.
