Free seeds don't necessarily have to come from a seed catalogueYou'll sometimes see companies that offer free seeds in their seed catalogue. Sometimes these free seeds will be sampler seed packets of different plants or vegetables so you can test their quality. Other times you will get a certain number free when you place an order from their seed catalogue. There are more ways to get free seeds than just from seed catalogues. One of the easiest ways is to save your own seeds. When you harvest your garden, you can save vegetable seeds for the following year. A big advantage of doing this is you know the quality and can have a pretty good idea of how successful they will be. Another great source for free seeds is other gardeners. If you have friends or family who grow their own vegetable garden, you can exchange seeds with them. This can also be a great way to share seeds you've ordered from a seed catalogue. If you both order different vegetable or different varieties, you can split the seeds. There are also gardening clubs that can be a great source of free seeds. These clubs often have seed exchanges set up so you can exchange seeds with other members. Some of these clubs are internet-based, so you might even be able to exchange seeds with people around the world. This way you could be starting seeds that are not even available to you locally or through a seed catalogue. |
