Some Cruciferous Vegetables Please!

Yes, that’s right, cruciferous vegetables. No, these aren’t some new-agey hybrid strange shaped vegetables. They aren’t even exotic vegetables! You may even have some vegetables of a cruciferous nature in your own garden! It’s a fancy sounding name for those vibrant green vegetables such as sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower etc. That’s right. There are gardeners all over your part of the world are planting vegetable seeds that that are cruciferous in nature and they didn’t even know it!

Ok, so a name like cruciferous doesn’t make them sound more appealing, and if any vegetable needed to sound more appealing, especially to children, it’s sprouts! But it does make them sound more “official” or health-inducing than usual vegetables!

What Makes a Crucifer Vegetable Special?

Scientists seem to be finding many benefits can be gained from regularly eating these vegetables.

Reports have been released which state that eating a portion of cruciferae can help reduce breast cancer, for example. Cancer in the colon or stomach can also be helped with these vegetables. This isn’t a cure. But who knows, one day it could lead to one. At the moment adding more vegetables which are cruciferous in nature to your diet could reduce your risk of developing these cancers.

However, these particular vegetables are known for their vitamin K production and so if you take blood thinning medication for whatever reason, you need to speak to your doctor before increasing your intake of cruciferae as these vegetables are known to speed up the rate at which your blood clots.

Your Granny was right. You should eat your vegetables! Vegetables are healthy for you! Scientists are proving it. So when you’re planning your vegetable garden next year, stick a few extra cruciferous seeds in there and start eating towards a healthier you!
