Using corn seed for planting corn in your garden

Corn can be grown in a small garden or in containers. This is because you can usually only expect to reap around two ears of corn from each stalk. They can be seeded about 4 weeks before you plan to set them into your garden or outdoor container using corn seed. The time for planting corn is based upon when your soil will be warmer than 60 degrees and air temperatures are 65 to 70 degrees. The corn seed should be planted around 1” down in moist soil. Warm, dry weather is generally best for planting corn. If you ensure the soil is kept consistently moist, the seeds should germinate within around 7 days. Keep the growing corn in a sunny, warm area until they are about 3 weeks old.

Caring for your corn seed when planting corn

Always water the corn seed with a watering can or small hose which is held low down. Compared to most vegetable seeds, corn has shallow roots so using black plastic mulch on top of the soil can help keep any potential weeds down. Corn is ready to harvest about 3 weeks after the silk appears at the end of the ear. The silk will dry out and turn brown when at their peak. You can then pick the ears by breaking them from their stalks. Do this at the base of the stalk. Eat your fresh corn as quickly as possible or seal and freeze if this is not possible. Planting corn is a rewarding outdoor pastime. Growing corn is simple and cheap to arrange and after the germination period provides great nutritional benefits for the whole family.
