Caring for your corn plant properly is important when growing corn

The corn plant is a little higher maintenance than some other vegetables. Growing corn will need to be cared for properly to product a good crop. The corn plant needs regular watering – from planting until harvest. Growing corn will normally have curled leaves during extremely hot temperatures, but if they curl anytime other than the hottest time of day they are not getting enough water.

The roots on a corn plant grow quite close to the surface. When weeding around your growing corn, you must be careful not to damage the roots of the corn plants. You can plant pumpkins or squash close to the corn to help retain moisture in the soil and protect the roots of the corn.

A corn plant doesn't transplant well - start from seed when growing corn.

Many vegetables can be started from seed indoors or in a greenhouse and then transplanted after the last frost date. The corn plant does not transplant well, so it should be started from corn seed in the garden. Seed corn is not particularly hardy, so it needs to planted after any danger of frost has passed.

The corn plant is ready to harvest 3 weeks or so after the silk appears at the end of the ears. It dries and turns brown when the growing corn is ready to be picked. White corn takes around 75 to 80 days to mature, while yellow corn takes approximately 65 to 70. Both varieties are available as sweet corn seed which, obviously, is sweeter and tastier to eat.
