Bring Country Life to the City with Container GardensContainer gardens are a delightful way to bring a soft, natural touch to any space you might consider too small for a true garden. Though they require a little work in the beginning, once they get started they are easy to maintain and will enhance your outdoor or indoor living space. You can even use the container method to grow a small vegetable garden or herb garden to add to your culinary experience. Plant containers come in every variety and price range. You can choose inexpensive containers for practicality, or pick containers which match a theme and make your garden a decorative addition to your space. A garden catalog is a great place to start, and many have special sections on container gardening. This will help you choose which plants, flowers, herbs, fruits, or vegetables to cultivate. Be sure to choose not only plants that you like, but ones which will not demand more of your time than you are willing to devote. Some will require daily watering and pruning (or more often), while others will need only occasional care. To Seed or Not To Seed…You can start a garden by seed, or purchase live plants. The seed method takes longer, but provides an extra dimension of satisfaction. After planting has taken place, it is important to water and fertilize your garden correctly. Methods and amounts will vary from plant to plant, so make sure you keep a list of clear instructions, both for yourself, and for anyone taking care of your garden while you’re gone. When your containers are bursting with life, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you planted and grew everything yourself. And your container garden will be the envy of everyone who visits it! |
