A Compost Screener Is An Essential Tool For Home Gardener Compost Pile

Rich, tilthy soil is the envy of every gardener. Adding compost to your garden soil or potted plants improves soil quality and adds precious plant nutrients. Best of all, it is free. It doesn’t take much, only a few simple tools, organic waste and a little labor. You will need is a good compost screener and a compost pile. A compost screener need not be expensive or very complex. A compost pile is easy to begin and properly maintained will provide a continuing supply of rich compost.

The compost screener is used to sift the end product. To begin, almost any organic material will work in your compost pile. You need the proper mix of green and brown organic matter. For example green materials may include garden waste, lawn clippings and kitchen refuse such as carrot tops, celery and lettuce trimmings, melon rinds and other vegetable matter. The brown materials include leaves raked up in the fall. Wood ashes may also be added to your growing supply of organic fertilizer.

A Compost Screener Helps Home Gardeners Sift Compost Pile For Best Gardening

The tools you will use are simple and easy to obtain. A compost screener and a wheelbarrow allow you to take the rich humus from the compost pile to the garden. The pile itself is contained in a compost bin. Add a shovel to the list and you have all of the equipment you need for producing top quality compost.

Compost is decayed plant material. Not only does the decaying process break this material down into a form other plants can use for nutrients; it feeds a variety of fungi, bacteria, insects and worms. These organisms add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to the compost. A compost screener gives the gardener the tool needed to sift the fully decayed humus from the materials still being broken down by organisms, heat and moisture. While the raw materials of the compost pile are easy to find, it should also be understood that the pile is a complex mini ecosystem. Properly maintained and managed a compost pile is a great source of food for growing vegetables and brightly colored flowers.
