Canadian Gardening Using Step by Step Garden Tips

Creating a Canadian gardening oasis in your own backyard is relatively easy with some step by step gardening tips. It only takes some planning, some time and an open mind to create a garden area that is perfect for entertaining and suitable for friends and family to eat, drink and be merry. Following these garden tips is all you need to begin:

  • Select an area in your garden where you feel you will get the most use of the space. Consider shade, exposure to the elements, size, ease of access to the house and privacy.
  • Decide if you want to create an area with a patio, deck and/or pool or spa or do you prefer an open spaced lawn area for lazy boys and table settings.
  • Think about access to your garden from multiple points – the rear of the house, the driveway, the side entrance, the entertaining area, and the showers/wet areas (if you plan to have a pool or spa). Make life easy for yourself by planning this now.
  • Grab a pen and some plotting paper, a yard stick or measuring tape and measure the space that you have available. Check the planting zones for Canada then sketch up vegetable garden plans, flower beds and furniture including places to sit and areas for the kids to play.
  • Consider surrounding the garden space with low maintenance planting bed shrubs and evergreens. This will provide the garden with a strong, solid backdrop of ‘always green’ color.
  • Define the edges of the garden and low maintenance shrubs with pavers or bricks. Pavers come in all shapes, sizes and color these days and can often be well matched to suit a variety of timbers used for decking.
  • Select some tasteful and subtle lighting to add another element to your garden. Think about where your guests will be particularly during evening events. Consider how you want to use your garden – for casual or formal entertaining – and how bright or subtle it really needs to be.

A good garden accessories or seed catalogue will often have garden tips as well. When you’re shopping for your seeds and garden plants, take a good look at the seed companies catalogue and website.
