The Hearty Soy Bean Seed Will Grow Under Any Conditions

Give it any kind of soil-- loamy, sandy or rocky-- and it will adapt and grow. Give it the barest nutritional essentials, and it will take more nitrogen, if it needs it, out of the air— and still grow! All the soy bean seed needs to germinate is warmth-- a minimum soil temperature of 55 to 60¼ F.

That’s why you’re better off with a thermometer at planting time than a calendar. Just because May is the usual time for planting, doesn't guarantee that it's the optimum time for planting soy bean. Seeds will remain dormant in the soil at low temperatures. And if they don’t emerge in due time, will be more exposed to diseases and injuries.

About five to ten days after planting, the new soybean emerges through the soil surface. Seed germination and emergence are the two most critical periods in growing beans. A delayed emergence can also result from caked soil crust pinning down the young seeds, or seeds planted too deeply. This can cause soybean pests or diseases to drastically reduce the yield of your planted beans.

The Female Soybean Plants Don’t Need Males To Reproduce - Smart Plants!

That’s using the old bean. After the seed has sprouted, the stem and first leaves begin to grow upward. After about six to ten leaves have formed, the soybean plant produces flowers and begins the reproductive period.

The flowers are self-pollinating; that is-- the female flower fertilizes itself, and insects or males are not required, in that order! From 3 to 15 flower buds develop at each node of the stem. In 1-2 weeks, seed pods appear. Then finally, it’s payoff time. And you will see soy! About 3-4 beans per pod!
