How to Grow Asparagus Plants From Seed
If you've been toying with the idea of planting some edibles among your ornamentals and foliage then growing asparagus plants are the garden seeds to start with. Growing asparagus from garden seed gives you a warm-season veggie with fernlike foliage - bright green in summer, golden in autumn - that's stunning enough to grace any garden.
Try the Following Tips for Growing Asparagus From Seed
- Settle on a garden design where your new plants won't be disturbed – particularly in a place where they can happily coexist for 10 to 15 years with other shrubs.
- Select an area to grow your asparagus that is either in partial or full sun (remembering that it performs best in full sun) in soil that is amended with plenty of organic matter that is rich in potassium and phosphorus.
- Buy asparagus crowns or starting seeds at your local garden supply, small plant nursery or through mail order seed companies. In cooler regions, plant them in early spring when the soil temperature has reached about 50 degrees F. In warm regions, plant in late winter.
- Prior to planting make a 7-inch-deep, V-shaped hole and in each one spread a handful of wood chips/flakes and a small layer of compost or well-rotted manure as fertilizer.
- Soak the asparagus crowns in a liquid compost solution for around 10-15 minutes prior to planting.
- Pre-prepare the soil by weeding carefully and then after you have filled the holes with the crowns mulch with chopped leaves or straw.
- Provide new asparagus plantings with 1-2 inches of water each week; after that, water only when rainfall is scarce.
